What is preconceptual counseling and why is it important?

Answer

All women who are contemplating getting pregnant in the next 3-4 months should have a sit-down session with their OB/Gyn for preconceptual counseling (counseling and evaluation of important issues and risk factors pertinent to all women who want to get pregnant, and specifically you as an individual with your own special medical, surgical, gynecologic, obstetrical, and age related history).

It is very important to have this counseling session because your Ob/Gyn will target important issues in your personal and family history and go over other ways to get you into the best situation possible to have the best pregnancy outcome when you do get pregnant and to minimize modifiable risk factors. Planning a pregnancy gives you and your baby the healthiest and best start.
